One of the biggest problems facing disabled adults today is finding employment. The unemployment rate for people with disabilities is twice as high as those without. Even when they do find work, it pays less than half what their non-disabled counterparts make. This can lead to a vicious cycle of poverty that’s hard to break out of. Luckily, there are many ways you can help! Here are three things you should know about helping disabled adults get jobs:
1) Employers need to be made aware that hiring people with disabilities benefits everyone – not just the person being hired
2) Hiring someone who has a disability could save your company money by increasing productivity
3) Many companies have programs in place designed specifically to hire people with disabilities
To help these individuals, we need to understand what it is that they want and need. A person’s disability does not have to be a barrier to their success. We all need to find ways in which we can facilitate the inclusion of this demographic.
