The Reason Behind Back Pain: Understanding Ankylosing Spondylitis

Many people suffer from back pain, but the root cause of ankylosing spondylitis may surprise you. Ankylosing spondylitis is a type of arthritis that affects the spine and is characterized by inflammation of the joints between the vertebrae. This inflammation leads to stiffness and pain in the back.

The exact root cause of ankylosing spondylitis is unknown, but it is believed to have a genetic component. Studies have shown that there is a link between the HLA-B27 gene and ankylosing spondylitis, meaning that individuals with this gene have a higher risk of developing the condition.

However, having the gene does not necessarily mean that someone will develop the condition. Other factors such as environmental triggers may also play a role.

Symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis typically begin in young adulthood and may include a slow onset of lower-back pain and stiffness, which can gradually worsen over time. Other joints, such as hips, shoulders, and knees, may also become affected.

Early diagnosis and treatment can help manage symptoms and slow its progression. Treatment may include physical therapy, pain management, and medication to reduce inflammation.

Understanding the root cause of ankylosing spondylitis can help individuals take proactive measures to manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life.
